2026 Free Agent Betting Impact

How Major Signings Change the Odds Landscape

Updated: December 28, 2025

The hot stove is burning and the sportsbooks are scrambling to adjust their lines. Every major free agent signing shifts win totals, division odds, and World Series futures. But here's the thing: books move fast on the headlines, but they often overcorrect or undercorrect depending on public perception versus actual player value.

I'm breaking down the biggest signings of the 2025-26 offseason and what they mean for your betting portfolio. This isn't just a recap. This is actionable intelligence.

Impact Tier: Season-Changing Signings

Corbin Burnes to Boston Red Sox
6 years / $210 million | Previous: Baltimore Orioles

This is the move that reshapes the AL East. The Red Sox had a rotation full of question marks, and now they have a legitimate ace. Burnes posted a 2.92 ERA with Baltimore in 2025, and his spin rates remain elite. Moving to Fenway isn't ideal for a fly-ball pitcher, but the Red Sox defense is strong enough to compensate.

Win Total Impact: +4 to +6 wins
Division Odds: Now +280 (was +450)
AL Pennant: +900 (was +1400)
The Play: Red Sox OVER 85.5 wins (if you can still find it). Their depth behind Burnes is better than people think, and the AL East isn't the juggernaut it was two years ago. The Orioles losing Burnes hurts them more than most are pricing in.
Pete Alonso to San Francisco Giants
5 years / $150 million | Previous: New York Mets

Oracle Park is a brutal place for power hitters, but Alonso's raw power transcends ballpark factors. He averaged 38 HRs over the last four seasons with the Mets, and while that'll dip in SF, he's still an impact bat in the middle of a lineup that desperately needed one.

Win Total Impact: +3 to +4 wins
NL West Odds: +550 (was +800)
Player HR Prop: O/U 34.5
The Fade: Giants World Series futures at +2500 are still too short. Alonso alone doesn't fix their pitching concerns, and the Dodgers and Padres are still significantly better rosters. Wait for a better number or bet elsewhere.

Mid-Tier Signings: Solid Value Adds

Alex Bregman to Detroit Tigers
5 years / $145 million | Previous: Houston Astros

The Tigers are going all-in on their young pitching core, and adding Bregman signals serious contention intent. His defense at third is Gold Glove caliber, and while his power numbers have dipped, he's still an elite contact hitter who rarely strikes out. Detroit's park should help his HR totals.

Win Total Impact: +3 wins
AL Central Odds: +180 (was +350)
The Play: Tigers AL Central at +180 is interesting. The Guardians aren't as deep as their 2025 record suggested (check their Pythagorean record), and the Tigers' rotation is scary good. Bregman stabilizes the entire infield.
Teoscar Hernandez to Arizona Diamondbacks
3 years / $66 million | Previous: Los Angeles Dodgers

Chase Field is heaven for right-handed power hitters, and Teoscar is about to feast. He posted a .903 OPS in the second half of 2025 with the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks already have a potent lineup, and adding Hernandez makes them dangerous from top to bottom.

Win Total Impact: +2 to +3 wins
NL West Odds: +400

Sneaky Signings: Under-the-Radar Value

Not every impactful signing makes ESPN's top story. These moves won't move the needle on futures, but they absolutely matter for daily betting:

Player New Team Why It Matters
Blake Snell Chicago Cubs When healthy, he's a Cy Young arm. Cubs rotation suddenly has 3 solid starters.
Luis Robert Jr. Toronto Blue Jays (trade) Finally escapes Chicago's rebuild. Could be a 30/30 threat in Rogers Centre.
Anthony Santander Texas Rangers Replaces departed offense. Globe Life is good for lefty power.
Walker Buehler Miami Marlins Reclamation project on a team with zero expectations. Daily fade candidate.
Cody Bellinger New York Yankees Short porch in right + launch angle = bounce-back HR numbers.

Futures to Target Now

Based on offseason movement, here are the futures I'm putting money on before spring training:

Detroit Tigers OVER 82.5 wins
The rotation of Skubal, Mize, and Manning is legitimate, and now they have a real lineup. The AL Central is wide open. This is my favorite offseason bet.
Boston Red Sox to win AL East +280
The Yankees are aging, the Orioles lost Burnes, and the Jays are in transition. Burnes makes the Red Sox the most complete team in the division.
Arizona Diamondbacks OVER 87.5 wins
They made the World Series in 2023, won 89 games in 2024, and got better this offseason. The Dodgers aren't untouchable, and the D-backs have the rotation to compete.

Futures to Avoid

Los Angeles Dodgers -350 to win NL West
They'll probably win it. But -350? You're risking $350 to win $100. The value simply isn't there. If one major injury hits, the Padres or D-backs pounce.
New York Mets World Series +1200
The Cohen money is real, but this roster has significant holes. They lost Alonso and haven't adequately replaced his production. Too many question marks for a +1200 price.
